Study summary

The purpose of the BBR is to facilitate scientific research by serving as a local and external resource for the distribution of human blood and CSF biospecimens, together with their corresponding clinical data, to internal and external researchers.

Read the detailed description

The goals for establishing the BBR are to:

  1. Establish the BBR at Parkwood Institute for the storage and archiving of human blood and CSF.
  2. Establish a local oversight committee composed of neurologists and community representatives to manage operations, review sample requests, and facilitate local, national, and external collaboration.
  3. Distribute well-characterized, high-quality biospecimens to internal and external scientific researchers.
  4. Promote public awareness of the importance of biospecimen collection in supporting brain disease research.

Study population

Eligible patients from the Aging Brain and Memory Clinic (ABMC), Cognitive Neurology, or participants who are enrolled in other research projects affiliated with the Cognitive Clinical Research Group or Cognitive Neurology will be invited to participate in the biorepository. This targeted recruitment strategy ensures that participants have relevant clinical profiles, facilitating efficient enrollment and supporting the study's focus on neurodegenerative conditions.

Go through the criteria one by one — yes, no or not sure — and take the list to your doctor or the study team. Kept in this browser only.

Inclusion criteria

  1. Written informed consent obtained and documented, either from the participant or the substitute decision-maker.
  2. Must be a patient from the Aging Brain and Memory Clinic, Cognitive Neurology, or enrolled in other research projects affiliated with the Cognitive Clinical Research Group or Cognitive Neurology.
  3. Geographic accessibility to the collection site.
  4. Ability to read, speak, and understand English.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion Criteria:

  1. Age under 18 years (pediatric population)
  2. Infectious disease cases such as prion diseases (e.g. Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease), Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Ebola, or any other pathogen requiring containment above Biosafety Level 1.

What researchers measure

Primary outcomes

  1. facilitate scientific research

The purpose of the BBR is to advance neurodegenerative disease research by providing high-quality human blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biospecimens, together with linked clinical, cognitive, imaging, and biomarker data, to internal and external investigators. Successful outcomes will be measured by the utilization of these resources to support biomarker discovery, validation, and implementation studies aimed at improving the diagnosis, prognosis, monitoring, and treatment of neurodegenerative disorders.
