Study summary

The prevalence of chronic rheumatic heart disease (RHD) on the island of Mayotte is unknown, but it appears to be high and is responsible for significant morbidity and mortality. Screening for RHD in schools is currently the only strategy for managing the cardiac complications of the disease; however, it requires trained medical personnel-a resource that is lacking in Mayotte, as is the case in many developing countries where the disease is endemic. RHD is a sequela of *Streptococcus pyogenes* infection, which can originate from tonsillitis or from impetigo secondary to a scabies infestation.
