Study summary

The aim of the current study is to:-Evaluate the efficacy of dialectical behavior therapy compared with individual and group supportive therapy for reducing suicide attempts and ideation among adolescence. Evaluate role of dialectical behavior therapy in improving emotional regulation and distress tolerance among adolescence with suicidal ideation and attempts

Read the detailed description

Suicide is a leading cause of death among adolescence in the United States. It accounts for more adolescent deaths than all natural causes combined, ranking as the third leading cause of death in this age group, preceded only by accidents and homicide. Although boys who complete suicide significantly outnumber girls, adolescent girls make two to four times as many suicide attempts as boys. Suicidal ideation refers to thoughts of harming or killing oneself. Attempted suicide is a non-fatal, self-inflicted destructive act with explicit or inferred intent to die. Suicide is a fatal self-inflicted destructive act with explicit or inferred intent to die. Suicidality refers to all suicide-related behaviors and thoughts including completing or attempting suicide, suicidal ideation or communications . In addition to the increased incidence of adolescent suicide over the past several decades , recent epidemiological studies suggest a parallel increase in the incidence of Adolescent suicide attempts, with lifetime rates among high school students ranging from 3.5% to 11% . For every death by suicide, there are an estimated 8 to 25 suicide attempts, and more youths engage in non-suicidal self-injury . Prior suicide attempts are indicators of suicide death, and prior suicide attempts and NSSI are indicators of future suicide attempts.

    Individual and Group Supportive Therapy

Individual and Group Supportive Therapy Group : Individual and group supportive therapy is a client centered treatment, consistent with the theory of Joiner et al that emphasized "thwarted belongingness" as a suicide risk factor, Individual and Group Supportive Therapy emphasized acceptance, validation, and feelings of connectedness and belonging

    Dialectical behavior therapy group

Dialectical behavior therapy group :It is a type of talk therapy , based on cognitive behavioral therapy , but it's specially adapted for people who experience emotions very intensely. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a type of talk therapy that helps people understand how thoughts affect emotions and behaviors. "Dialectical" means combining opposite ideas. Dialectical behavior therapy focuses on helping people accept the reality of their lives and their behaviors, as well as helping them learn to change their lives, including their unhelpful behaviors. Dialectical behavior therapy was developed in the 1970s by Marsha Linehan, an American psychologist. Dialectical behavior therapy is especially effective for people who have difficulty managing and regulating their emotions.

What researchers measure

Primary outcomes

  1. Assessment of suicidal ideation and behavior by Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale

It is a suicidal ideation and behavior rating scale created by researchers at Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania, University of Pittsburgh and NewYork University to evaluate suicide risk. It rates an individual's degree of suicidal ideation on a scale, ranging from "wish to be dead" to "active suicidal ideation with specific plan and intent and behaviors." Questions are phrased for use in an interview format, but the C SSRS may be completed as a self-report measure if necessary. The scale identifies specific behaviors which may be indicative of an individual's intent to kill oneself. An individual exhibiting even a single behavior identified by the scale was 8 to 10 times more likely to die by suicide If the respondent answers "yes" to Question 2, he/she is instructed to answer Questions 3-5.

    Time frame: 3 months

Secondary outcomes

  1. measure of emotional distress tolerance by Distress Tolerance Scale

It has been used to assess individual differences in the ability to experience and withstand negative psychological states. Individuals select on a 1-5 likert scale (Strongly Disagree, Mildly Disagree, Feel Neutral, Mildly Agree, Strongly Agree) about each of the 15 statements about distress.

    Time frame: 3 months

Ran from Jun 2024 to primary completion in Jun 2025, 12 months.

Of 235 non-industry interventional studies with no phase under Behavior, half reached primary completion within 22 months of starting (the median), counting those still running; a quarter within 8 and three quarters within 51. This study's 12 months is below that.

Counting every sponsor, half of 241 studies reached it within 20 months; a quarter within 7 and three quarters within 50.

How these figures are worked out, and which studies are left out of them.

What these dates mean
Start.
When the first participant enrolled; while estimated, when the study expects to open to recruitment.
Primary completion.
When the last participant was examined or treated to collect data for the study's main question, its primary outcome. A study that stopped early gives the date its data collection stopped.
Completion.
When the last participant's last visit took place, for every outcome, secondary ones and side effects included: the end of the study. Often later than primary completion, sometimes the same day.
Actual and Est.
Actual means the registry says the date has happened. Est. (estimated) is a date the sponsor plans or expects. It can still move, and the sponsor is expected to change it to actual once it has passed.
