An observational study in Dental Caries, sponsored by University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Completed at 1 site in Spain. Open to participants aged 19 Years and older, including healthy volunteers. Per ClinicalTrials.gov, last updated 2026-10-21.
Sponsored by University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria · Observational
This cross-sectional study assessed the level of oral health knowledge and its relationship with caries experience, independently of age and sex, in adult patients attending a university dental clinic in Gran Canaria (Spain). Adults aged 19 years or older completed a validated 20-item oral health knowledge questionnaire and underwent a standardized clinical dental examination, complemented by a same-day panoramic radiograph obtained as part of routine care, to record the Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth (DMFT) index according to World Health Organization criteria. The association between knowledge and the DMFT index was analyzed using negative binomial regression adjusted for age and sex.

Exclusion Criteria:
Adults aged 19 years or older attending the Dental Clinic of Universidad Fernando Pessoa Canarias (Gran Canaria, Spain) between October 2023 and December 2024, who completed the oral health knowledge questionnaire and a clinical dental examination.
Oral health knowledge score
Oral health knowledge assessed with a validated 20-item self-administered questionnaire (Torres Loaiza) covering dietary habits, oral diseases and oral hygiene. Each correct answer scores 1 point (total score 0-20; higher scores indicate better knowledge). Knowledge was classified as poor (0-6), fair (7-13) or good (14-20).
Time frame: Baseline (single assessment at the study visit)
Caries experience (DMFT index)
Caries experience assessed with the Decayed, Missing and Filled Teeth (DMFT) index according to WHO criteria, through a clinical examination by a single trained examiner supported by a panoramic radiograph. DMFT is the sum of decayed, missing due to caries and filled permanent teeth (range 0-28; third molars excluded; higher values indicate greater caries experience).
Time frame: Baseline (single assessment at the study visit)
Number of decayed teeth
Number of permanent teeth with untreated caries (D component of the DMFT index), recorded according to WHO criteria during the clinical examination with radiographic support (range 0-28).
Time frame: Baseline (single assessment at the study visit)
Number of missing teeth
Number of permanent teeth missing due to caries (M component of the DMFT index), recorded according to WHO criteria during the clinical examination with radiographic support (range 0-28).
Time frame: Baseline (single assessment at the study visit)
