An interventional study of Pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block and Suprainguinal Fascia Iliaca Plane Block in Total Hip Arthroplasty, Postoperative Pain, sponsored by Uludag University. Completed at 1 site in Turkey (Türkiye). Open to participants aged 18 Years and older. Per ClinicalTrials.gov, last updated 2026-10-19.
Sponsored by Uludag University · Not applicable, Interventional, and Treatment
Total hip arthroplasty can cause significant pain after surgery. Regional anesthesia techniques, such as the pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block and the suprainguinal fascia iliaca plane block, may help reduce postoperative pain and opioid requirements. However, these techniques may also affect muscle strength and early mobilization.
This randomized, controlled, prospective study compares the effects of PENG block, suprainguinal fascia iliaca plane block, and no regional block in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty. Postoperative pain, opioid consumption, quadriceps muscle strength, and hip flexion are evaluated to compare the analgesic effectiveness and motor effects of these approaches.

Exclusion Criteria:
Participants undergoing total hip arthroplasty received a pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block for postoperative analgesia.
Procedure: Pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block
Participants undergoing total hip arthroplasty received a suprainguinal fascia iliaca plane block for postoperative analgesia.
Procedure: Suprainguinal Fascia Iliaca Plane Block
Participants undergoing total hip arthroplasty did not receive a regional nerve block. Standard perioperative care and analgesia were provided according to the study protocol.
Ultrasound-guided pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block performed for postoperative analgesia in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty.
Ultrasound-guided suprainguinal fascia iliaca plane block performed for postoperative analgesia in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty.
Postoperative Pain Scores
Postoperative pain intensity was assessed using the visual analog scale (VAS), with scores recorded on a 0-100 mm scale. Pain scores were compared among the PENG block, suprainguinal fascia iliaca plane block, and control groups.
Time frame: Up to 24 hours after surgery.
Quadriceps Muscle Strength
Quadriceps muscle strength was assessed using manual muscle testing (MMT).
Time frame: Up to 24 hours after surgery.
Hip Flexion Angle
Hip flexion angle was measured in degrees.
Time frame: Up to 24 hours after surgery.
