Study summary

This study aims to evaluate the practical and research utility of a new test assessing language and memory in people with MS. To this end, we are administering the test to a group of 100 individuals with MS who are receiving treatment at the National MS Center Melsbroek.

These data will allow us to determine whether scores on the new test correlate with those of established cognitive tests. Subsequently, we will administer the new test to 100 individuals without an MS diagnosis who are matched for age, gender, and education level. This will enable us to assess whether there are significant differences in scores between individuals with MS and those without the diagnosis.

One year later, we will re-administer the tests to the participants with MS to determine the extent to which changes in scores on the new test correspond to changes in scores on established tests.

Inclusion criteria

  • Native Dutch speaking
  • Sufficient visual function (capacity to perceive test stimuli)
  • Minimal single hand function to execute test responses
  • Cognitive capacity to apprehend test instructions

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Insufficient visual function (capacity to perceive test stimuli)
  • Inability to perform single-hand motor movements required to complete the test (e.g., tapping, selecting responses)
  • Insufficient cognitive capacity to understand or follow test instructions

What researchers measure

Primary outcomes

  1. Language and Memory Test (LMT)

The LMT is a brief multidomain test assessing finger tapping speed, rapid lexical access, and visuospatial memory, designed for MS populations.

Time frame: Baseline, after one week and and after one year

Other outcomes

  1. Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT)

Participants match symbols and digits as quickly as possible following standardized oral instruc-tions. The test measures processing speed and sustained attention.

Time frame: Baseline and after one year

  2. Cognitive Change Scale (CCS)

The CCS assesses subjective cognitive changes over the past year and includes four validated subscales relevant to MS populations: general cognition, language and executive function, external feedback, and coping strategies.

Time frame: Baseline and after one year

ElapsedEstimatedEstimated, not yet reachedSimilar studies: half by the dot; the band is the middle halfHalf of similar studies reached it by the dot; the band is the middle half, from a quarter to three quarters

Start is estimated for Oct 2026; primary completion for Feb 2028, 16 months later.

Of 341 non-industry observational studies under Multiple Sclerosis, half reached primary completion within 37 months of starting (the median), counting those still running; a quarter within 13 and three quarters within 72. This study's planned 16 months is below that.

Counting every sponsor, half of 440 studies reached it within 41 months; a quarter within 15 and three quarters within 75.

How these figures are worked out, and which studies are left out of them.

What these dates mean
Start.
When the first participant enrolled; while estimated, when the study expects to open to recruitment.
Primary completion.
When the last participant was examined or treated to collect data for the study's main question, its primary outcome. A study that stopped early gives the date its data collection stopped.
Completion.
When the last participant's last visit took place, for every outcome, secondary ones and side effects included: the end of the study. Often later than primary completion, sometimes the same day.
Actual and Est.
Actual means the registry says the date has happened. Est. (estimated) is a date the sponsor plans or expects. It can still move, and the sponsor is expected to change it to actual once it has passed.
