Study summary

Validated physical activity questionnaires are often long and time-consuming, particularly when assessing both leisure-time and occupational physical activity and sedentary behavior.

The ACTIWORK study aims to validate a short questionnaire assessing physical activity at work and during leisure time, as well as sedentary behavior, by comparison with the reference Recent Physical Activity Questionnaire (RPAQ).

Participants will complete the study questionnaires twice, approximately one week apart, to assess the consistency of their responses over time.

Read the detailed description

ACTIWORK is an observational questionnaire validation study.

The primary objective is to validate the ACTIWORK questionnaire by comparison with the reference Recent Physical Activity Questionnaire (RPAQ). The secondary objectives are to investigate the relationships between the questionnaires and sociodemographic, occupational, and lifestyle characteristics as an assessment of external validity, and to validate the REPEAS questionnaire assessing environmental and personal barriers to regular physical activity.

Two modes of questionnaire administration may be proposed: a paper version and an electronic version using REDCap®.

Participants will complete the ACTIWORK questionnaire, the REPEAS questionnaire, and the RPAQ. The questionnaires used for the test-retest assessment will be completed twice, approximately one week apart, in order to assess the consistency of responses between the two measurement times. Sociodemographic, occupational, and lifestyle characteristics will be collected once.

For the paper version, questionnaires completed approximately one week apart will carry the same identification number so that responses from the same participant can be linked. No identifying information will be collected.

For the electronic version, the questionnaire may be distributed through anonymous mailing lists, social networks, flyers distributed in public places, and other channels. Participants will be invited to complete part of the questionnaire again approximately one week after the first assessment. For this purpose, participants will provide their email address at the end of the first questionnaire. To ensure anonymity, participants' email addresses will not be accessible to the study investigators or collaborators. Participants will be contacted directly by REDCap® for the retest.

The main constraint associated with participation is the time required to complete the questionnaires, approximately 20 minutes at each of the two assessments.

Interventions

  • OtherACTIWORK questionnaire

Short questionnaire assessing physical activity and sedentary behavior, including leisure-time and occupational physical activity, sitting time, and work-related characteristics. The questionnaire is administered twice, approximately one week apart, for test-retest assessment.

  • OtherRecent Physical Activity Questionnaire (RPAQ)

Reference questionnaire assessing physical activity during the previous four weeks, including physical activity at home, at work, during commuting, and during leisure time. The RPAQ is administered twice, approximately one week apart.

  • OtherREPEAS questionnaire

Questionnaire assessing environmental and personal barriers to regular physical activity. The questionnaire includes 12 items covering environmental and personal factors that may limit regular physical activity and is administered twice, approximately one week apart.
