Study summary

The goal of this study is to learn if peer ambassador support will increase clinical trial enrollment in patients with ovarian cancer.

Participants will participate in a peer ambassador program where a patient ambassador (mentor) will be paired with a mentee. The patient ambassador will be a patient with history of cancer who has participated in a clinical trial and can serve as an ambassador to facilitate discussions regarding education and awareness of clinical trials.

Read the detailed description

Participants will participate in a peer ambassador program where a patient ambassador (mentor) will be paired with a mentee. The patient ambassador will be a patient with history of cancer who has participated in a clinical trial and can serve as an ambassador to facilitate discussions regarding education and awareness of clinical trials. This discussion will potentially assist mentees to make informed decisions about their engagement in discussing clinical trials, looking for clinical trials, and desire and acceptance of clinical trials. This will also allow ambassadors to gain information about perceived barriers regarding clinical trials.

This study will be a multi-institutional prospective cohort study conducted at Penn and Hopkins. We seek to identify approximately 10 patient ambassadors, who will be trained to lead 1:1 discussion with patient mentees. Each ambassador will be paired with up to 10 mentees. Each ambassador-mentee pairing will have 1-2 encounters (meetings) over the course of 12 months.

    Peer Ambassador Encounter

Mentees will participate in an enrollment session, discussion session with an ambassador, close out session, and 12 month clinical care follow up during which electronic medical records will be reviewed to assess whether mentees are subsequently screened or enrolled in clinical trials.

What researchers measure

Primary outcomes

  1. Attitude about enrolling in trials

Participants' attitudes about enrolling in trials will be assessed through the Attitudes Toward Cancer Trials Scales (ACTS). Scores will range from 18-126. The difference between pre and post intervention scores will be assessed.

Time frame: 12 months from enrollment

  2. Intent to Enroll in Trials

Participants' intent to enroll in trials will be assessed through a previously validated Attitudes and Intention to Enroll in Therapeutic Clinical Trials (AIET) instrument. Responses will range from yes or no.

Time frame: 12 months from enrollment

Secondary outcomes

  1. Mentee knowledge regarding clinical trials before and after discussion sessions

This will be assessed using a knowledge of clinical trials questionnaire. Scores will range from 0-12. The difference between pre and post intervention scores will be assessed.

Time frame: Within 12 weeks of completing all sessions

  2. Feasibility of this ambassador program

Feasibility of this ambassador program will be assessed using the Feasibility of Intervention Measure (FIM). Scores will range from 1-5.

Time frame: 12 months from study start

  3. Acceptability of this ambassador program

Acceptability will be assessed using the Acceptability of Intervention Measure (AIM). Scores will range from 1-5.

Time frame: 12 months from study start

  4. Proportion of mentees in this program who enrolled onto a clinical trial

Mentees will be followed for 12 months and it will be documented if they enroll in a clinical trial. The percent of mentees who enroll in a clinical trial will be calculated.

Time frame: 12 months from study start

Start is estimated for Oct 2026; primary completion for Sep 2027, 11 months later.

Of 253 non-industry interventional studies with no phase under Ovarian Neoplasms, half reached primary completion within 50 months of starting (the median), counting those still running; a quarter within 24 and three quarters within 83. This study's planned 11 months is below that.

Counting every sponsor, half of 259 studies reached it within 49 months; a quarter within 24 and three quarters within 76.

How these figures are worked out, and which studies are left out of them.

What these dates mean
Start.
When the first participant enrolled; while estimated, when the study expects to open to recruitment.
Primary completion.
When the last participant was examined or treated to collect data for the study's main question, its primary outcome. A study that stopped early gives the date its data collection stopped.
Completion.
When the last participant's last visit took place, for every outcome, secondary ones and side effects included: the end of the study. Often later than primary completion, sometimes the same day.
Actual and Est.
Actual means the registry says the date has happened. Est. (estimated) is a date the sponsor plans or expects. It can still move, and the sponsor is expected to change it to actual once it has passed.
