Study population

The study population will consist of never-smokers who have at least one prespecified high-risk factor for lung cancer, recruited from approximately 10 Brazilian centers.

Go through the criteria one by one — yes, no or not sure — and take the list to your doctor or the study team. Kept in this browser only.

Inclusion criteria

  • - Sign and date the informed consent form before any study-specific procedure.
  • - Be a never-smoker, defined as an individual who has smoked fewer than 100 cigarettes in their lifetime and who has no history of regular use of cigars, pipes, straw cigarettes, or hookahs.
  • - Men aged 50 to 74 or women aged 40 to 74 at the time of enrollment.
  • - Meet at least one of the following high-risk criteria: A first-degree relative or two second-degree relatives diagnosed with lung cancer; Current or previous occupational exposure to asbestos, nickel, arsenic, beryllium, silica, or chromium for at least 1 year; Exposure for more than five years to household smoke from coal or firewood, foundry smoke, or comparable industrial smoke; Known germline mutation in genes associated with an increased risk of lung cancer, including TP53, BRCA1, BRCA2, or ATM.
  • - Be physically and medically capable of undergoing a chest CT scan in the supine position.
  • - Be available for follow-up according to the study schedule.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion Criteria:

  • - Previous diagnosis of invasive cancer, except for in situ neoplasms or treated non-melanoma skin tumors, when deemed clinically irrelevant by the investigator.
  • - History of using cigars, pipes, straw cigarettes, or hookahs on more than 100 occasions throughout their lifetime, or regular use (≥ 1 time per week for ≥ 6 consecutive months).
  • - Physical inability to remain in the supine position during a chest CT scan.
  • - Inability to understand, sign, or maintain informed consent.
  • - A clinical condition that, in the investigator's judgment, precludes the safe performance of study procedures or the planned follow-up.

What researchers measure

Primary outcomes

  1. Detection rate of confirmed lung cancer among screened participants

The primary objective is to determine the detection rate of lung cancer, with an emphasis on early-stage disease, in high-risk never-smokers undergoing LDCT screening. The analysis will estimate the rate as the number of participants with a confirmed diagnosis divided by the number of enrolled participants who underwent baseline LDCT.

Time frame: From baseline assessment through the 24-month follow-up period.

Secondary outcomes

  1. Recruitment rate

To estimate the recruitment rate per center and per month.

Time frame: Throughout the enrollment period, ending September 2027.

  2. Retention rate

To estimate the retention rate between the baseline round and the 24-month follow-up assessment.

Time frame: From baseline to 24 months.

  3. Prevalence of lung cancer detected at baseline

To describe the prevalence of lung cancer detected at the baseline visit.

    Time frame: At baseline visit.

  4. Incidence of lung cancer over follow-up

To describe the incidence of lung cancer over the follow-up period.

Time frame: Over the 24-month follow-up period.

  5. Diagnostic accuracy of LDCT

To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of LDCT in detecting lung cancer, including sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV).

Time frame: Through study completion, approximately at 24 months.

  6. Distribution of radiological findings

To describe the distribution of radiological findings, Lung-RADS v1.0 categories, additional procedures, referrals, and the false-positive rate.

Time frame: Through study completion, approximately at 24 months.

  7. Characterization of diagnosed tumors

Characterize the diagnosed tumors according to clinical stage, histology, diagnostic method, and time to diagnostic confirmation.

Time frame: At time of diagnosis.

1 registry update since Sep 25, 2026
ElapsedEstimatedEstimated, not yet reachedSimilar studies: half by the dot; the band is the middle halfHalf of similar studies reached it by the dot; the band is the middle half, from a quarter to three quarters

Start is estimated for Nov 2026; primary completion for Oct 2030, 47 months later.

Of 107 industry-sponsored observational studies under Lung Neoplasms, half reached primary completion within 45 months of starting (the median), counting those still running; a quarter within 25 and three quarters within 59. This study's planned 47 months is close to that.

Counting every sponsor, half of 692 studies reached it within 56 months; a quarter within 28 and three quarters within 130.

How these figures are worked out, and which studies are left out of them.

What these dates mean
Start.
When the first participant enrolled; while estimated, when the study expects to open to recruitment.
Primary completion.
When the last participant was examined or treated to collect data for the study's main question, its primary outcome. A study that stopped early gives the date its data collection stopped.
Completion.
When the last participant's last visit took place, for every outcome, secondary ones and side effects included: the end of the study. Often later than primary completion, sometimes the same day.
Actual and Est.
Actual means the registry says the date has happened. Est. (estimated) is a date the sponsor plans or expects. It can still move, and the sponsor is expected to change it to actual once it has passed.
