Study summary

The pain associated with endometriosis reflects a multifactorial pathophysiology combining peripheral nociception, central sensitisation and psychosocial factors. Although surgery is an integral part of treatment, a significant proportion of patients experience persistent pain several months after the procedure. To date, postoperative pain trajectories after endometriosis surgery remain poorly characterised, and there are no reliable predictors of chronic postoperative pain (CPP). This prospective, single-centre, longitudinal study aims to identify distinct postoperative pain trajectories and to assess whether perioperative quantitative sensory testing can predict the development of chronic postoperative pain at 3 and 6 months. Patients will undergo perioperative mechanical and pressure tests, including assessment of temporal summation and pressure pain thresholds, combined with validated measures of patient- reported outcomes. Follow-up assessments will be conducted on day 2, day 14, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months after surgery to capture the dynamic evolution of pain, quality of life, fatigue, sexual function, and central sensitisation symptoms.

What researchers measure

Primary outcomes

  1. Brief Pain Inventory values for pain intensity and interference measurement

Postoperative pain trajectories derived from repeated assessments of pain intensity and interference (Brief Pain Inventory) Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) is a questionnaire with 15 questions. For each question 0 is the smallest score and 10 is the highest score

    Time frame: day 2

  2. EHP-5 values for quality of life measurement

Postoperative pain trajectories derived from quality of life (EHP-5) EHP-5 (Endometriosis health profile 5) is a questionnaire with 10 questions

    Time frame: day 2

  3. EHP-5 values for quality of life measurement

Postoperative pain trajectories derived from quality of life (EHP-5) EHP-5 (Endometriosis health profile 5) is a questionnaire with 10 questions

    Time frame: at 6 months

  4. FSFI values for sexual function measurement

Postoperative pain trajectories derived sexual function (FSFI), Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) is a questionnaire with 4 questions

    Time frame: day 2

  5. FSFI values for sexual function measurement

Postoperative pain trajectories derived sexual function (FSFI), Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) is a questionnaire with 4 questions

    Time frame: at 6 months

  6. Brief Pain Inventory values for pain intensity and interference measurements

Timeline

1 registry update since Sep 25, 2026
ElapsedEstimatedEstimated, not yet reachedSimilar studies: half by the dot; the band is the middle halfHalf of similar studies reached it by the dot; the band is the middle half, from a quarter to three quarters

Started Jul 2026 (actual). Primary completion is estimated for Jul 2028, 24 months after the start.

Of 153 non-industry observational studies under Endometriosis, half reached primary completion within 30 months of starting (the median), counting those still running; a quarter within 14 and three quarters within 48. This study's planned 24 months is below that.

Counting every sponsor, half of 182 studies reached it within 30 months; a quarter within 14 and three quarters within 48.

How these figures are worked out, and which studies are left out of them.

What these dates mean
Start.
When the first participant enrolled; while estimated, when the study expects to open to recruitment.
Primary completion.
When the last participant was examined or treated to collect data for the study's main question, its primary outcome. A study that stopped early gives the date its data collection stopped.
Completion.
When the last participant's last visit took place, for every outcome, secondary ones and side effects included: the end of the study. Often later than primary completion, sometimes the same day.
Actual and Est.
Actual means the registry says the date has happened. Est. (estimated) is a date the sponsor plans or expects. It can still move, and the sponsor is expected to change it to actual once it has passed.
