Study summary

Goals : ( a) to examine differences in cortical activity during hand movements with a mirror compared to imagery of the same movements, and (b) to examine correlation between cortical activity during imagery or mirror treatment and the pain and performance measures in finger amputees.

A cross-sectional study of 20 subjects in a Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) preforming mirror therapy hand movement and imagery hand movement. Also, Visual Analogue Scale for pain and the Disability of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) questionnaire and Jebsen Taylor Hand Function Test will be used.

Goals : ( a) to examine differences in cortical activity during hand movements with a mirror compared to imagery of the same movements, and (b) to examine correlation between cortical activity during imagery or mirror treatment and the pain and performance measures in finger amputees.

A cross-sectional one-meeting study of 20 subjects (finger amputees) in a Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) preforming mirror therapy hand movement and imagery hand movement. Also, Visual Analogue Scale for pain and the Disability of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) questionnaire and Jebsen Taylor Hand Function Test will be used.

    Amputees

The subjects will receive both mirror and imagery treatments in a cross-over design.

    Other: Mirror · Other: Imagery

Interventions

  • OtherMirror

The healthy hand will be mirrored and the amputated hand unseen by the subject while performing hand movements.

  • OtherImagery

The subject will be asked to imagine performing hand movements.

What researchers measure

Primary outcomes

  1. Cortical activity

Activation of supplementary motor area (SMA), S1 and M1.

    Time frame: 1 hour

Secondary outcomes

  1. Visual analogue scale

Filled by the subject for subjective pain in residuum discomfort.

    Time frame: 10 minutes

  2. Disability of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand

Questionnaire regarding the disability and daily activities difficulties.

    Time frame: 30 minutes

  3. The Jebsen Taylor Hand Function Test

What these dates mean
Start.
When the first participant enrolled; while estimated, when the study expects to open to recruitment.
Primary completion.
When the last participant was examined or treated to collect data for the study's main question, its primary outcome. A study that stopped early gives the date its data collection stopped.
Actual and Est.
Actual means the registry says the date has happened. Est. (estimated) is a date the sponsor plans or expects. It can still move, and the sponsor is expected to change it to actual once it has passed.
No changes since tracking began. The registry record was last updated on Jul 20, 2016, before this site started recording changes on Sep 25, 2026. Its history is on ClinicalTrials.gov ↗
