An interventional study of MyDiet App in Nutrition Education, sponsored by University of Alberta. Not yet recruiting. Open to participants aged 18 Years and older, including healthy volunteers. Per ClinicalTrials.gov, last updated 2026-10-26.
Sponsored by University of Alberta · Not applicable, Interventional, and Supportive care
This study aims to evaluate MyDiet, a nutrition education app designed to improve nutrition knowledge among healthcare providers. In this randomized trial, participants will be assigned to one of two groups: an intervention group or a control crossover group. Participants in the intervention group will have access to the app for two months, while those in the control crossover group will receive access during the second month of their participation.
The study will evaluate whether the app improves nutrition knowledge, has the potential to influence dietary behaviors, and supports healthcare providers in strengthening their ability to provide nutrition-related advice to their patients.
This is a two-month long study evaluating MyDiet App for it's potential in improving nutrition knowledge. In this study, there are two arms : Intervention Arm (accesses the app for the entire duration of the study i.e. 2 months) and the Control Crossover Arm (accessed the app for the latter half of the study ). There will be three visits ( Baseline, Month 1 and Month 2).
At each of these visits, following study procedures will be conducted:
Visit 1 (Baseline): This will be about 30 minutes long. Participants will complete a demographics questionnaire, medical history and anthropometrics (weight, height, waist circumference). They will also complete the Canadian Behavior, Attitude and Nutrition Knowledge Survey 2.0 (C-BANKS 2.0). Participants in the intervention arm will receive access to the app.
Visit 2 (Month 1): This will be about 30 minutes long as well. Participants will complete anthropometrics, C-BANKS 2.0. Participants in the intervention arm will also complete the mHealth App Usability Questionnaire (mAUQ), Theoretical Framework of Acceptability (TFA) questionnaire, and ABACUS App Behavior Change Tool. Participants in the Control Crossover Arm will get access to the app.
Visit 3 (Month 2): This will be about 30 minutes long. Participants will complete C-BANKS 2.0 survey, mAUQ, TFA, ABACUS. At each visit, participants will also complete a 3-day food recall. Optional: Participants will be provided with an option to provide a blood and stool sample for metabolomics and microbial analyses, and a urine sample to measure sodium and chloride levels as an indirect estimate of ultra-processed food intake. If they agree, the samples will be collected at each visit.

MyDiet App is a nutrition guidance app designed to support self-management of diet and nutrition. The app provides immediate feedback on nutrition parameters like level of food processing and adherence to a mediterranean style of eating for food items logged.
Nutrition Knowledge
Change in nutrition knowledge as assessed by change in Canadian Behavior, Attitude and Nutrition Knowledge Survey (C-BANKS 2.0) survey scores from baseline to end of month 1 between intervention and control crossover group. The C-BANKS 2.0 Survey score ranges from 14.3 to 100, where higher scores indicate higher nutrition knowledge.
Time frame: 1 month
Nutrition Knowledge
Within group change in C-BANKS 2.0 survey scores from baseline to end of month 2 in the intervention group. The C-BANKS 2.0 Survey score ranges from 14.3 to 100, where higher scores indicate higher nutrition knowledge.
Time frame: 2 months

Time frame: 1 month
Diet Quality
Change in diet quality as assessed using Health Eating Index (HEI) pre and post intervention in control crossover group. The HEI score ranges from 0 to 100, where higher scores indicate better diet quality.

App's potential to change behavior
Assessed using the ABACUS app behavior change scale at the end of intervention. The ABACUS scale scores range from 0 to 21, where higher scores indicate higher behavior change potential.

Usability of the app
Assessed using the mAUQ questionnaire at the end of participation in the study after starting intervention. The 18-items on this questionnaire are scored on a likert scale of 1 to 7, where higher scores indicate better usability.
Time frame: Anytime in 2 months based on end of participation.
Acceptability
Assessed using the TFA questionnaire at the end of participation in the study after starting intervention. The 8-items on this questionnaire are scored on a likert scale of 1 to 5, where higher scores indicate better acceptability.
Time frame: Anytime in 2 months based on end of participation
Adherence to Mediterranean diet
Assessed using the mediterranean diet serving score (MDSS) over time in the intervention group. MDSS score ranges from 0 to 24 , where a higher score indicates better adherence to mediterranean pattern of eating.
