Study summary

The aim of this study is to examine the effects of a web-based escape room (EQUITY-ROOM) and a web-based branching scenario (EQUITY-PATH) simulation added to standardized video-based education on nursing students' gender perception, dating violence myths, and dating violence attitudes. The study is designed as a 3-arm pretest-posttest parallel randomized controlled trial. Participants (3rd-year nursing students, N=72) will be randomly allocated to three groups in a 1:1:1 ratio:

  1. EQUITY-ROOM Group: Standardized video-based education + Web-based Escape Room Game
  2. EQUITY-PATH Group: Standardized video-based education + Web-based Branching Scenario GameActive
  3. Control Group: Standardized video-based education onlyPrimary outcome is attitudes toward dating violence, while gender perception and dating violence myths serve as secondary outcomes. Outcome measures will be evaluated before the intervention (pretest) and one week after the intervention (posttest).
Read the detailed description

Addressing gender equality, dating violence, and violence myths among healthcare trainees is vital for establishing supportive professional attitudes and healthy interpersonal dynamics. Digital gamification strategies offer interactive, realistic learning opportunities to enhance engagement and cognitive processing.

Design and Procedures:

This 3-arm parallel randomized controlled trial will be conducted at Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey University Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing. Third-year undergraduate nursing students meeting inclusion criteria will be randomized via computer-based block randomization (1:1:1) into three study arms (n=24 per arm, total N=72).

Intervention Protocol:

Session 1 (Baseline): All participants complete baseline outcome measures (Demographic Information Form, Gender Perception Scale, Dating Violence Myths Scale, and Dating Violence Attitude Scale) and attend a standardized video-based educational session covering gender equality, types of violence, dynamics of dating violence, institutional support mechanisms, and common violence myths.

Session 2 (1 Week Post-Baseline):

EQUITY-ROOM Intervention Arm: Participants engage in a 4-stage web-based escape room game in teams of three. Teams solve digital clues related to gender perception and dating violence to retrieve physical key codes. Digital badges ("Gender Perception Detective" and "Non-Violent Relationship Ambassador") and certificates of achievement are provided upon stage completions as intrinsic motivators.

EQUITY-PATH Intervention Arm: Participants engage individually in a 10-scenario web-based branching scenario simulation. Participants navigate decision nodes representing critical choices in romantic relationships, receiving real-time immediate feedback and adaptive sub-scenarios based on risk assessment. The digital badge "Conscious Decision Maker" is awarded upon completion.

Active Control Arm: Participants receive only the standardized video-based education without additional gamified simulation.

Statistical Analysis:

Data analysis will follow an Intention-to-Treat (ITT) approach. Baseline comparability across arms will be evaluated using Chi-Square tests and One-Way ANOVA/MANOVA. Intra-group, inter-group, and time x group interaction effects for primary and secondary outcomes will be tested using Two-Way Repeated Measures MANOVA/MANCOVA. To minimize bias, data collectors and biostatisticians analyzing outcomes will be blinded to group allocations.

What researchers measure

Primary outcomes

  1. Change from Baseline in Dating Violence Attitudes at 1 Week Post-Intervention

Measured using the Dating Violence Attitude Scale (DVAS / Flört Şiddeti Tutum Ölçeği). The scale consists of 28 items rated on a 5-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 5 = Strongly Agree). Total average scores range from 1 to 5, where higher scores indicate more positive attitudes non-supportive of dating violence.

    Time frame: Baseline (pre-test) and 1 week post-intervention (post-test)

Secondary outcomes

  1. Change from Baseline in Gender Perception at 1 Week Post-Intervention

Measured using the Gender Perception Scale (GPS / Toplumsal Cinsiyet Algısı Ölçeği). The scale consists of 25 items rated on a 5-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 5 = Strongly Agree). Total scores range from 25 to 125, with higher scores indicating a more positive perception of gender equality.

    Time frame: Baseline (pre-test) and 1 week post-intervention (post-test)

  2. Change from Baseline in Dating Violence Myths at 1 Week Post-Intervention

Measured using the Dating Violence Myths Scale (DVMS / Flört Şiddeti Mitleri Ölçeği). The scale consists of 9 items rated on a 6-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 6 = Strongly Agree). Total scores range from 9 to 54, with higher scores indicating greater endorsement of dating violence myths.

    Time frame: Baseline (pre-test) and 1 week post-intervention (post-test)
