Study summary

The primary aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of a controlled breathing exercises-on autonomic nervous system functions (HRV) and perceived stress levels in healthy young adults with dysfunctional breathing patterns.

The secondary objectives of the study are:

  • To examine changes in HRV parameters, which serve as an indicator of vagal tone.
  • To identify improvements in participants' subjective stress levels and dysfunctional breathing symptoms following the intervention.

This study aims to demonstrate the efficacy of a low-cost, non-invasive, and sustainable respiratory rehabilitation strategy for clinical practice.

Study arms

  • Experimental
    intervention group slow-paced breathing

Participants in this group will practice a 6-week slow-paced breathing intervention

    Behavioral: slow-paced breathing

  • No intervention
    control group

Participants in this group will not perform any breathing exercises and will continue their usual daily

Interventions

  • Behavioralslow-paced breathing

Participants in the intervention group will undergo a 6-week slow-paced breathing protocol, practicing guided slow breathing at a rate of 6 breaths per minute using a pacing application

What researchers measure

Primary outcomes

  1. heart rate variability

Assessed using time-domain (SDNN, RMSSD) recorded by Polar H10 chest strap during rest.

Time frame: baseline and 6 weeks

  2. heart rate variability

frequency-domain (LF, HF, LF/HF ratio) parameters recorded by Polar H10 chest strap during rest.

Time frame: baseline and 6 weeks

Secondary outcomes

  1. perceived stress scale

assessed using the 10-item perceived stress scale pss-10 to evaluate subjective stress levels

Time frame: baseline and 6 weeks

  2. nijmegen questionnaire

Assessed using the Nijmegen Questionnaire to evaluate dysfunctional breathing patterns

Time frame: baseline and 6 weeks

What these dates mean
Start.
When the first participant enrolled; while estimated, when the study expects to open to recruitment.
Primary completion.
When the last participant was examined or treated to collect data for the study's main question, its primary outcome. A study that stopped early gives the date its data collection stopped.
Completion.
When the last participant's last visit took place, for every outcome, secondary ones and side effects included: the end of the study. Often later than primary completion, sometimes the same day.
Actual and Est.
Actual means the registry says the date has happened. Est. (estimated) is a date the sponsor plans or expects. It can still move, and the sponsor is expected to change it to actual once it has passed.
